We think it is the best place on the Oregon coast
because of its magnificent natural setting. Just north of Cape Perpetua,
Yachats nestles cozily between the ocean and the coast range. Here basaltic
headlands push out into the sea with sheltering coves and beaches between them.
Yachats is close to major attractions such as Cape
Perpetua's Interpretive Center and Lookout, which provide - among other things
- some of the best locations for whale watching. A few miles further south, the
Sea Lion Caves are home to the wild Steller sea lions and one of the largest
sea caves in the world. The Oregon Coast Aquarium with its giant octopus and
adorable otters is just a half-hour's drive north. Heceta Head and Yaquina
Lighthouses, covered bridges and multiple park and wilderness areas are all
within an easy drive.
Yachats is, however, far enough away from these
attractions that we experience little of the crowds and tension. It is a place
for rest, relaxation and romance.
Yachats has a mild climate with a week or so of
frost in the winter and even occasionally an inch or so of snow that may last a
day or two. It can get down into the teens and twenties but most usually is in
the 40's and 50's in winter and early spring. In late spring, summer and early
fall, highs are often in the 60's and 70's with an occasional 80 degree day.
The average rainfall is around 65" to 70". It is windy at most times of the
year but especially from November to March. Wind gusts of 70 to 80 miles are
not unusual in some of the major winter storms. |
